Photo Booth Business UK: How A Second Revenue Line Pays Back
A photo booth business in the UK is a hire business: you buy the kit once and sell the same booking again and again. That is also its weak spot, because every other booth in your area sells the same booking. This is for operators who already hire out a booth, or are about to, and want a second thing to sell to the same clients, with the sums in the open.
Is A Photo Booth Business A Good Idea In The UK?
It can be, if you treat it as a diary of bookings rather than a machine. UK wedding hire runs from £350 to £1,200 a booking according to Bridebook, so a few steady weekends cover the kit. The risk is selling the same thing as every other booth in your postcode.
Bridebook's wedding guide, last updated on 28 July 2026, says a standard hire covers three to four hours and that the typical couple spends £400 to £700. Its table of booth types shows how close together the prices sit.
| Booth type | Typical price for a wedding hire |
|---|---|
| Enclosed classic | £350 to £650 |
| Open-air | £350 to £600 |
| Mirror | £300 to £750 |
| 360 | £300 to £800 |
| Digital or AI | £150 to £800 |
Five booth types, one price band. A couple comparing quotes sees similar lists, and the booking goes to whoever is available on the date or £50 cheaper. None of the five rows is a robot that draws in pen on paper, so a second product gives you something to quote that is not compared with a booth.
How Much Does A Photo Booth Business Make?
Revenue is bookings multiplied by price. Four bookings a month at £500 is £2,000 a month, or £24,000 a year, before kit, insurance, travel and your time. These are our sums with every input shown, so change the two numbers to match your area.
The kit is bought once and your weekends are fixed, so profit depends on how many bookings the diary holds. A second product adds bookings from the same clients. It also lets you take a second booking on a Saturday your booth is already out, if you have someone to staff it.
On tax, gov.uk sets the VAT registration threshold at £90,000 of taxable turnover, and you can register below it by choice. Ask your accountant how it applies to you before you set prices.
What Is A Second Revenue Line For A Photo Booth Business?
It is a second product you sell to the same clients, run with different kit, so your diary does not depend on one machine. For a booth operator, a drawing robot is one: a robot arm that draws each guest's caricature in pen on paper, live, from a photo taken on the guest's own phone.
We saw how that plays out at PBX Europe in Amsterdam, on 27 and 28 September 2026. We took PictiaX® to the sector's own trade fair and drew more than 1,000 caricatures in two days and impressed visitors from Europe and the United States. The whole stand, tablecloth, robots and banner, travelled in checked luggage.
What stopped people was the line. Watching the robots draw live, they stayed for the continuous stroke of the pen, one line from start to finish. A booth makes a picture. This makes a drawing, in front of the queue, and the guest keeps the paper.
How Many Bookings Does A Drawing Robot Need To Pay For Itself?
At £700 a booking, five. The complete PictiaX® system costs €3,500 including tax, about £2,934, and 100 portraits cost €12.00 to €17.00 in PICTICOINS, so nearly all of what you charge is margin before travel, paper and your time. £700 is the top of what Bridebook says the typical couple spends on a booth, and well under the agency listings further down. The table runs the same sum at four prices.
| You charge per booking | In euros (about) | Bookings to cover the system |
|---|---|---|
| £450 | €535 | 7 |
| £700 | €835 | 5 |
| £1,000 | €1,195 | 3 |
| £1,500 | €1,790 | 2 |
How the sum is built: €3,500 is £2,934 at the ECB reference rate of 0.83825 pounds to the euro on 21 October 2026. Each booking assumes 100 portraits at the top of the range, €17.00 or about £14.25, and the result is rounded up to a whole booking. Paper, pens, travel, insurance and your time are not in it.
The 500 portraits that come with the system cover five bookings of 100 portraits, so the PICTICOINS for your first five are already paid. Two bookings a month at £700 is £16,800 a year, and the PICTICOINS take at most about £342 of it. At that pace the system is covered in two and a half months.
How Many Portraits Fit In One Booking?
Around 50 to 60 an hour per arm. PictiaX® draws a portrait in around 60 seconds, depending on the detail, the paper size and the speed you pick, and it keeps that pace for the whole booking.
A three-hour reception is therefore 150 to 180 portraits on one arm, and a booking of 100 portraits takes under two hours. Sell by the hour with a cap on portraits, or run two arms for a bigger room. One licence covers up to 6 arms in the same place, and a second arm is quoted on request.
The software has a speed setting, fast, medium or slow, because most event tables move. If the queue builds you trade a little detail for speed without stopping the event.
Which Bookings Pay The Most?
Corporate and brand bookings, going by agency prices. A London event agency lists an AI sketch robot with an on-site operator from £2,751 plus VAT and travel, and a branded AI sketch format from £1,965 plus VAT and travel. Those are agency prices to brands, not what you would quote a bride, but they show where the ceiling sits.
The wedding is the easier first sale because your clients are already there: names and date on every portrait, and guests who leave with a dated keepsake. The company event is where the price per booking rises. How to pitch planners and agencies is in caricature booth for corporate events.
What Did Operators Learn At The First Real Events?
An operator who tested the system at real events in summer 2026 told us four things, and each one changed how we set it up.
- Events ask for caricatures far more than portraits, so that is the style to have ready first.
- Portrait mode draws the background too. A tree behind the guest can triple the drawing time.
- Phone close to the face gives a better likeness. The guide circle in the app helps guests frame it.
- Fine pens of 0.4 mm. Thicker ones eat the lines.
Our own first drawings had faults too. In July 2026 the early caricatures came out with double lines on eyes and eyebrows, circles that merged, spikes outside the hair and scribbles on detailed clothing. The fault was not in the robot or the vectoriser. It was one step earlier: the guide the AI generated had strokes so fine that they overlapped on the paper. We changed the vectorising engine and the model that makes the guide, and built a tool to test new engines in minutes.
Other changes came from events: an auto-send timer that leaves time to change the paper, an arm that slows down on the last stroke so it does not leave ink blots, and a check on every portrait before it is drawn, so one guest can never affect the others. Calibration was the hardest part at the start, so first set-up is taught with guided videos.
Should You Buy A Photo Booth To Hire Out, Or Add A Drawing Robot?
If you have no kit, a classic booth is the format clients already search for, and you will be compared on price. If you already hire out booths, a second booth copies what you have, while a drawing robot adds a different booking. PictiaX® is not a photo booth. It is another line on your hire list, with its own kit and its own price.
- Offer it first to clients who have booked you before, as an add-on to the evening they already have.
- Sell it by the hour with a cap on portraits, using the portraits-per-hour figures above.
- Keep the first booking simple: one style, one paper size, and the venue's socket as the only request.
- Use the 500 included portraits on the first five bookings, then top up.
Generating a portrait needs a connection, so take your phone as a back-up hotspot. If the network drops, the queue is saved and pending portraits retry on their own. The full list of checks before you commit is in the checks to make when choosing a caricature robot, and the price and the warranty are on the buy page. Shipping terms are agreed country by country, and we give them to you before you buy.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is a photo booth business profitable in the UK?
It can be. Bridebook puts UK wedding hire at £350 to £1,200 a booking, so a few bookings a month cover the kit, but profit depends on how full the diary is and on what you spend on insurance, travel and time. A second product for the same clients adds bookings without adding a copy of your first booth.
How much money does a photo booth make?
Revenue is bookings multiplied by price. Four bookings a month at £500 is £2,000 a month before costs, as an example. Bridebook's table puts typical wedding hire between £150 and £800 depending on the booth type, and the typical couple spends £400 to £700.
How many bookings does it take to pay back a drawing robot?
At £700 a booking, five. At £450 it is seven, at £1,000 three. The sum uses the €3,500 system price (about £2,934) and 100 portraits at €17.00 in PICTICOINS, and leaves out paper, pens, travel and insurance.
Can I add a drawing robot to an existing photo booth business?
Yes. It is a separate kit and a separate booking, so it sits next to your booths on the hire list. It fits in a car, one person sets it up in about ten minutes and the guest takes the photo on their own phone.
Do I need to register for VAT?
Gov.uk sets the VAT registration threshold at £90,000 of taxable turnover, and you can register below it by choice. Ask your accountant how it applies to your business.
Does the €3,500 price include delivery to the UK?
The €3,500 includes tax. Shipping terms are agreed country by country and we tell you them before you buy.
